MINORITY'S HOME & TEMPLE RAGED: TWO HOUSEWIVES BRUTALLY PERSECUTED IN SATKHIRA

Translated from "The Daily Jugantor" dated Tuesday July 08, 2003

Satkhira Correspondant:

The terrorist brigade of a local leader of the political party of Jamaat-E- Islami led by Mr. Kowsar Mollah conducted a three hour long rampage in the village of Biswanathpur under the sub district of
Kaligaonj in Satkhira, Bangladesh, during which they wiped out all the houses and the Godess Kali temple of the Sarkers [Hindu family name].

On Saturday, July 5, late at night, while the three brothers were out working at their shrimp culture site, the terrorists waged the attack.
Mr. Kowsor Mollah himself and his gang of terrorists first raped the two women.  Then they destroyed three houses, a kitchen, a cow shed, and the Goddess Kali temple of Mr. Suren Sarker, Mr. Biren Sarker, and Mr. Dhiren Sarker and then threw the rubbles into a pond.

The two injured ladies, who are currently receiving treatment at Kaligonj hospital, informed us that the cadres of Kowsar Mollah wants to grab their property and drive them out [meaning out of the country].
The Assistant Superintendent of Police who visited the site yesterday admitted to The Daily Jugantar that one of the hospitalized housewives complained to him of having been raped.

While visiting the village of Biswanathpur, located 50 miles off of Kaligonj on Monday [July 07, 2003], we found that the site of Mr. Dhirendra Nath Sarker's home complex and temple had been leveled and transformed into a playground.   There was no way to know that the place was a human habitat with houses standing there only two days ago.
Just some rubble of the razed houses and temple were seen scattered about the place.

Both the victims and the residents of the village hold the cadres of the former chairman of the Local Government (Union Council) Mr. Abdul Gafur [a Muslim] responsible for the rampage.

The police quickly summoned Mr. Dhriendra Nath Sarker to the precinct and had him sign off on a pre-written complaint about the incident, thus making the case a trivial one.

Our Barguna correspondent reports that in another incident in Dakshin Betagi, under the district of Betagi, the former Chairman of the Local Government, Mr. Shajahan Kabir, has seized a house and the living room of Mr. Pabitra Kabiraj and is preparing to erect a building on the site.

The Kabiraj family has filed complaints with the district administrator and the superintendent of police.  However, they fear that they would be evicted from their home any moment.   They are living in great anxiety and uncertainly.

Translator's note!
The first incident has been reported in most of the major newspapers of Bangladesh.
