THE DAILY JANAKANTHA Wednesday MARCH 12, 2003
(Translated by Basu Bose, HRCBM)
Staff Reporter, Chittagong Bureau: Four {BNP) men
terrorized a helpless (Hindu) garment factory worker in Chittaganj and took
their turns in raping her. The police declined to file a charge because this
(Mafia like) gang of four took shelter in the offices of the BNP (Bangladesh
Nationalist Party} center.
On Tuesday evening the local community came forward to help and took the gang
rape victim to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. At the time of writing this
report, it was not known whether the female victim was admitted to the hospital.
The gang rape was committed on the hills adjacent to the
entrance of the garment factory in Bayejid area of. the town The victim’s
mother, a Hindu, and her two young
daughters live in rented rooms in
the crammed quarters of Mullah
Amtola Colony. Five days before the
incident, the victim’s mother, Sandhya Rani, had left the place to travel to
her ancestral village home.
About 5 or 6 of well-known local gangsters made their entry into the residence
around 7:45 PM. The victim was alone at the time and waiting for her older
sister to return home from work.
The gang then lifted the young woman by force and carried her away to the nearby
hills. Then followed the ghastly gang rape attacks on the woman. Once their
collective mission was finished; they left her unconscious on the hills.
When the older sister returned home and could not find her sister there, she
frantically asked for local help to organize a search party. After a desperate
search, the victim was found lying unconscious on the hills After rescuing her,
they gave her some medicines bought from the local pharmacy.
According to the rape victim’s statement, the four-gang rapists identified
were Mintu, Shahid, Bablu, and Khokan. On Tuesday morning, her older sister took
her to the local Bayejit Bostami Police Station to file a report .The police
officer on duty refused to take her statement and asked her and her sister to
leave.
When the news of their treatment at the police
station became known to “Bangladesh Manabidhakar Basstubayan Sanghstha” - a
human rights organization- it immediately undertook filing a case at the court
of law. Advocate Zia Habib Ahsan, local president of the organization, demanded
immediate removal of (Bayejit Bostami) police officer in charge for refusing to
file a criminal case of such barbaric dimension. He further stated that it is
reprehensible that the police by delaying to take her evidence and thereby
affecting the strength of her case at the law court, has effectively sided with
these despicable criminals responsible for the victim’s ordeal.
