Terrorists on rampage at Takurgao, 40 minority families took refugee to UP office

Report translated from “The daily Janakantha” dated 27 January, 2002.

Takurga, 26 January, Staff Reporter: Two women wounded women are admitted to hospital and 40 other minority families have desolated their home due to racial rampage directed by Mr. Abul Hosain a local leader of “Jamait” (a coalition party in the government of Bangladesh). Due to lack of protection from the local administration the uprooted minority families have taken refugee to local “Union Parishad” Office.  The brigand lead by Abul Hosain at Goalpara of Lakshmipur village under Rahimanpur union of Takurgao demanded ransom to one widow Shaikha Baowa. The lady denied to provide them with ransom, as a result, the miscreants snatched away 10 to 12 goats from the victims that was the only earthly belonging of the widow.  Later, the same brigand also asked ransom to the villagers at Goalpara but the villagers denied to comply. Miscreants than attacked Mukmal and Tukmal Barman and seriously wounded them. When mother of the two victims came to rescue her son, the miscreants attack on her too and broke her “Shakha” (a religious ornament that denotes the pride of married Hindu women). The utter cries of the victims summoned other minority villagers for their rescue but brigands lead by Abul then attacked on the whole community causing panic among the minorities.  Minorities of the villages run out chaotically to save their life. Seriously wounded Shaikha Baowa (60) and Maini Barman (45) latter admitted to Takurgao hospital.
Fearing further violence minorities escaped the village with whatever earthly belongings can be carried and took refuge to the office of “Union Parishad” where they arranged a hunger strike in demand of protection.

Although local administration has promised to safeguard minority families, no person has arrested yet and hence minorities are afraid to return to their desolated village. Some believe that terrorist Abul and his gang are linked with ruling party leaders.
