FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bangladesh — October 30, 2024 — The Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM) strongly condemns the recent filing of sedition charges against Chinmaya Krishna Bhrammacharee, a prominent Hindu religious leader and advocate for minority rights in Bangladesh. The case, initiated by Firoz Khan, 49, of Chittagong, is viewed by HRCBM as baseless and politically motivated, aiming to suppress the voices of minority communities.
The fact that law enforcement authorities have permitted such unfounded allegations to proceed against a respected figure like Chinmaya Krishna Bhrammacharee indicates a troubling pattern of state-sponsored efforts to undermine and intimidate minority rights movements. This action reflects a broader strategy to subjugate and silence those who courageously stand for justice and equality in Bangladesh.
HRCBM President's Statement
“The sedition charges against Chinmaya Krishna Bhrammacharee are not only unfounded but also highlight a deliberate attempt to stifle the legitimate advocacy of minority rights,” stated the HRCBM President. “We call upon the Bangladeshi authorities to immediately dismiss these charges and uphold the constitutional rights of all citizens, ensuring that minority communities can express their concerns without fear of retribution.”
HRCBM urges the international community, human rights organizations, and allied governments to condemn these oppressive actions and to support efforts to protect the rights and freedoms of minority groups in Bangladesh. The organization remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for justice, equity, and tolerance, standing in solidarity with those who champion these fundamental values.
